How Often Should My Exotic Pet Be Seen?
Each exotic species has different care requirements, but the following are general wellness guidelines to help keep your pet healthy:
- Ferrets: Every 6–12 months (bi-annual exams recommended for pets over age 3–4)
- Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas: Annual exams; twice yearly for seniors
- Small rodents (rats, hamsters, mice, hedgehogs): Twice yearly for wellness exams
- Reptiles: Annual visits to review husbandry, diet, and screen for common health issues
- Birds: Annual or bi-annual exams, depending on age and current health
These are general recommendations—your pet’s needs may vary based on age, species, and lifestyle. If your exotic companion seems “off,” is eating less, acting unusually, or showing any signs of illness, we recommend scheduling an exam promptly. Exotic pets often hide symptoms, so early detection and treatment are key to their health and longevity.
Preparing for Your Visit
To make your visit as smooth and stress-free as possible, please keep the following in mind:
- Use a secure carrier appropriate for your pet’s species to prevent escapes and reduce stress
- Fasting requirements vary by species. For example, guinea pigs, rabbits, and chinchillas should never be fasted. If you’re unsure about your pet’s needs, please give us a call.
- Bring any previous medical records, including vaccination history
- List current medications and supplements your pet is taking
- Be ready to discuss diet and environment in detail—both are essential to exotic pet health
